Short answer
For solid steps poured on grade, each step's volume is run × (rise × step number) × width, plus the top landing. Four 7-inch steps with 11-inch treads, 4 feet wide, with a 36-inch landing, need 49.4 cubic feet (1.83 cubic yards), about 83 bags of 80 lb mix.
| 4 steps, 7 × 11 in, 4 ft wide + 36 in landing | 1.83 cu yd |
|---|---|
| Same, no landing | 0.79 cu yd |
| 80 lb bag yield | 0.60 cu ft[1] |
Forming steps
Steps are one of the harder DIY pours: forms, rebar and a clean finish on every tread. Compare quotes from licensed contractors. Choose "Steps or stairs" in the quote form.

Frequently asked questions
What's a normal rise and run for steps?
+
Residential steps are commonly around 7 inches rise and 11 inches run, but your local building code sets the limits, so check before you form them.
Does this work for steps against a house?
+
Yes, it assumes solid concrete from the ground up. If steps are hollow or filled with gravel, the actual concrete will be less.
