Short answer

Start a concrete patio quote with the layout and how you will use the space. Ask contractors to account for doors, steps, drainage, access for the pour and the chosen finish. Compare written bids for the same footprint and preparation work, then check examples of similar completed patios before choosing a contractor.

Design the usable space before choosing the pattern

Mark out the proposed patio and place your furniture within it. Leave room to pull out chairs, walk around a grill and reach doors or gates. Tell the contractor about future additions such as a cover, outdoor kitchen or hot tub; these may change the design and should not be treated as ordinary patio furniture. Ask for a drawing that shows the edge, steps and transitions to the garden so everyone is pricing the same layout.

Ask how the crew will reach the backyard

Measure gates and side passages, and photograph fences, landscaping and overhead obstructions along the route. Ask whether the bid assumes direct truck access, a pump or another placement method. Include protection and restoration of the access route in the discussion. If an old patio must be removed, check where debris will be stored and whether disposal is part of the written price.

Compare finish, comfort and upkeep together

A plain finish, exposed aggregate and stamped pattern create different surfaces and maintenance expectations. Ask to see samples and existing work, including the joints and edges. Discuss wet-weather use, barefoot use around a pool, cleaning and any proposed sealer. Have the contractor explain the drainage plan and transitions at doorways rather than choosing on appearance alone. Ask which finish changes are optional upgrades and which are included in the base bid.

Separate the patio from related work

Lighting, drainage changes, a patio cover, retaining walls and landscaping may involve separate contractors or approvals. Identify who coordinates those items before the pour. A clear scope makes it easier to compare a patio-only estimate with a larger outdoor-living proposal. Confirm when furniture can be placed, how the patio should be cared for and who to contact if a problem appears after handover.

What your concrete patios quote should include

  • Footprint, steps, door thresholds and intended use
  • Removal, delivery access and landscape restoration
  • Ground preparation, slab design and drainage
  • Finish samples, edge details and joint layout
  • Curing, furniture access and maintenance instructions

For budgeting, read the concrete patios cost guide. These are national estimates, not a local bid. Use the project calculator for quantities after the dimensions are established.

Frequently asked questions

Can a patio slab support a future hot tub or roof?

+

Do not assume that it can. Tell the contractor about these plans before design and ask whether separate foundations, engineering or approvals are needed.

Is stamped concrete included in a standard patio quote?

+

Ask for it as a clearly named option. Compare the pattern, colors, borders, sealer and preparation included in each proposal.
