Short answer
For a continuous footing, multiply total length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (ft) and divide by 27. Example: 120 ft of footing (a 24 × 36 ft perimeter), 16 inches wide and 8 inches deep, needs 3.95 cubic yards.
| 120 ft × 16 in × 8 in | 3.95 cu yd |
|---|---|
| Per 10 ft at 16 × 8 in | 0.33 cu yd |
| Ready-mix | $160–$195+ per cu yd[2] |
Footings with piers or walls
Use the Column / Sonotube tab for round piers and the Wall tab for a stem wall on top of the footing, then add the volumes. Structural footings usually need a permit and inspection. Licensed foundation contractors can confirm the size for your site.

Frequently asked questions
How do I measure footing length?
+
Add up the length of every side. A 24 × 36 ft rectangle has 2 × 24 + 2 × 36 = 120 ft of footing.
How wide and deep should a footing be?
+
It depends on the load, the soil and local frost depth, so footing size is set by your building code or engineer. Ask your local building department before you dig.
