Short answer
A residential concrete driveway should be at least 4 inches thick for passenger cars and SUVs. If you park trucks or RVs weighing 12,000 pounds or more, increase it to 5 or 6 inches. Either way, pour it on a well-compacted gravel base. Use wire mesh for 4–5 inch slabs and rebar for 5 inches and up.
| Cars and SUVs | 4 inches minimum[1] |
|---|---|
| Trucks/RVs 12,000+ lb | 5–6 inches[1] |
| Supplier rule of thumb | 4 in for cars, about 5 in for heavy vehicles[2] |
| Base | compacted, well-graded gravel[1] |
| Reinforcement | wire mesh at 4–5 in, rebar at 5 in+[1] |
| Concrete per 100 sq ft at 4 in | ≈ 1.23 cu yd |
| Concrete per 100 sq ft at 6 in | ≈ 1.85 cu yd |
Why the base matters as much as thickness
A thick slab on poorly compacted soil will still settle and crack. A compacted gravel subbase gives uniform support, drains water and prevents erosion under the slab. This matters most in wet Western Washington and in freeze-thaw areas east of the Cascades.

Frequently asked questions
Is 4 inches of concrete enough for a driveway?
+
For passenger cars and SUVs, yes, if it's on a properly compacted base. If heavy trucks, RVs or delivery vehicles use the driveway, go to 5–6 inches.
Does reinforcement stop cracks?
+
No. Wire mesh or rebar won't prevent cracks, but it holds them together if they happen. Control joints and a good base do more to prevent random cracking.
How much more does a thicker driveway cost?
+
Going from 4 to 6 inches uses 50% more concrete: about 1.85 instead of 1.23 cubic yards per 100 sq ft. Labor rises less than that, so the total goes up by less than 50%.
